Bitcoin mining software

Before ASIC mining hardware era bitcoin was mined on CPU and bit later GPU/FGPA. Back to 2009 only one bitcoin mining software exist - original bitcoin client from Satoshi Nakomoto, but later several mining clients for pooled mining was created by bitcoin developers. The most popular software for bitcoin mining on CPU was:

  • cpuminer
  • ufasoft miner

In the 2011 almost all bitcoin miners switched to GPU/FPGA mining and developers created new mining software. The most popular software for bitcoin mining on GPU was:

  • poclbm miner
  • DiabloMiner
  • cgminer
  • bfgminer

Today's bitcoin GPU mining is useless due very high mining difficulty in the bitcoin network, so almost all btcoin miners use ASIC mining hardware. ASIC mining hardware usually use Linux with some modified open source bitcoin mining sofware, but light version of mining hardware with connection to PC also exist. The most popular software for bitcoin mining on ASIC mining hardware:

  • bfgminer
  • cgminer
